Earlier this month, Thomas - who replaced former Mayor Ernest Davis, who pleaded guilty to federal charges against him during his tenure in office - was charged with multiple felonies by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who alleges he used tens of thousands of dollars in campaign funds as a “personal piggy bank.”
Thomas has denied any allegations of corruption, stating that the charges are “technical in nature relating to Election Law,” and are “merely accusations with no supporting evidence.”
According to the lohud report, Thomas has also collected more than $100,000 as a trustee at the Amani Public Charter School, which would be in violation of state education laws, which state that trustees of public charter schools are not supposed to be compensated for their work. The Mount Vernon Board of Ethics levied the latest claim against Thomas.
Thomas was charged with third-degree grand larceny and two counts of third-degree ordering a false instrument for filing, all felonies. He was also charged with two counts of second-degree offering a false instrument for filing, misdemeanors earlier this month.
